Optimum Nutrition Creatine

Optimum Nutrition Logo

Optimum Nutrition’s creatine supplement is a creatine monohydrate product. If you’ve read any of our blogs, we typically find a way to bring up creatine supplements because they’re something we truly believe in. We feel that most healthy adults can benefit from creatine use.

This specifically applies to those trying to:

  • lose weight
  • increase muscle mass
  • boost performance and stamina
  • increase strength

Creatine is especially helpful for individuals who are active and trying to do any of the things mentioned above. In addition to these benefits, creatine supplements are excellent for our vegetarian and vegan athletes because creatine from whole foods comes almost exclusively from animal products. In contrast, creatine supplements are created in a lab and are therefore vegan-friendly.

Even beyond helping active individuals, there is also some research that supports creatine supplementation benefits those who are sedentary—what other supplement does that? We’ve written a lot about why we love creatine and who we think should use it; if you’re interested in learning more, check out this blog

Why Creatine Monohydrate?

We mentioned creatine supplements are lab-made, and as a result, there are many different versions from which to choose.

Some of the most popular forms are:

  • creatine monohydrate
  • creatine HCL
  • creatine ethyl ester
  • buffered creatine
  • creatine magnesium chelate

All these versions almost always claim to be superior to the next. Supplement Superstore only ever recommends creatine monohydrate. This is simply because all the research we’re always quoting about how safe and effective creatine is, is done with creatine monohydrate. Until research proves one of these other forms is superior, we will stick with suggesting creatine monohydrate.

Now, we love Optimum Nutrition creatine and suggest it to anyone just starting to use this supplement or anyone who wants a stand-alone creatine product instead of a pre-workout blend. Along with being a basic, no-frills product, Optimum Nutrition’s creatine monohydrate is micronized.

Why is Micronized Best?

Micronized refers to the creatine molecules. In micronized creatine, the individual molecules are cut up, increasing the surface area and ensuring the product is more easily absorbed and utilized by the body. Micronized creatine is also easier on the stomach—some of the common side effects (especially if you do a “loading” phase) are gas, bloating, and some GI discomfort.

Now, the supplement review:

Taste

Optimum Nutrition Micronized Creatine PowderOptimum Nutrition’s creatine is unflavoured, so you might be wondering why we’ve even bothered including taste in this supplement review. Well, sometimes “unflavoured” supplements do have a flavour, and if that’s the case, it’s typically rather unpleasant.

So, we’re reporting that, yes, Optimum Nutrition’s creatine is truly flavourless, which means you can add it to any drink without it affecting the taste you know.

Texture

As a natural result of a synthetically produced product, Optimum Nutrition creatine will slightly affect the texture of your beverage. It is a little bit gritty. But, again, this is the nature of creatine products and not a flaw in this specific product. Therefore, this doesn’t affect our overall supplement review rating.

Overall Rank

As far as creatine monohydrate goes, you can’t ask for more. We give Optimum Nutrition creatine 10 out of 10.

Do Customers Agree?

Our customers agree with this ranking, as there’s nothing negative to be said. However, if you’re looking for additional benefits and effects from a supplement, a blended product might better suit your needs.

Don’t Want to Use Another Powder? Try Optimum Nutrition Creatine Capsules

Optimum Nutrition Micronized Creatine Capsules

For those who aren’t interested in messing with the texture of their protein powder at all, creatine capsules are an excellent option. These capsules contain the same micronized creatine monohydrate and are equally effective.

The only thing worth noting is that these capsules make the normally vegan-friendly product less so, as these capsules are made with gelatin.
