Supplement Superstore Reviews: Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Casein Protein
Welcome back to the Supplement Superstore Review series. Today, we’re talking about another top product from one of the best supplement brands in the game, Optimum Nutrition.
Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard line includes the most popular and trusted whey protein on the market, Gold Standard Whey, which we’ve already reviewed for you. Today, we’re talking about Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard Casein protein.
Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard Casein Protein
ON’s Gold Standard Casein has the same purity and potency as its whey counterpart. It’s got:
- 24 grams of protein
- 9 grams of EAAs
- 120 calories
As with the Gold Standard Whey, the Gold Standard Casein protein’s fat, carb, and sugar content are negligible. These supplements are designed to provide you with pure protein and not much more.
As we’ve come to expect from Optimum Nutrition, this product is also deliciously flavoured and silky smooth. However, if you’re already a whey fan who doesn’t know much about casein, you might be wondering why bother? If they’re both dairy-based protein supplements, why switch? Well, we don’t recommend switching, so much as we recommend adding Gold Standard Casein to your regimen.
Why Should I Use Casein Protein?
You likely use whey protein immediately post-workout because whey is known to digest quickly and easily, so the protein can be put to work in your muscles as soon as possible. For a post-workout shake, that’s ideal. But, what about when your muscles are going long periods without the necessary fuel to repair and build?
- between meals
- skipped meals
These periods are critical for optimal recovery and growth, and they’re often left unchecked. The addition of a slower-digesting protein prior to times like these can be a real game-changer for anyone looking to:
- improve recovery
- build muscle
- improve body composition
- increase protein consumption
What is Casein Protein?
Casein protein is derived from milk the same way whey protein is—milk is heated, and special enzymes cause coagulation. Coagulation separates the liquid from the solid milk parts. The liquid is whey, which can be washed, dried, and turned into whey protein supplements. The curds are casein, which can be washed and dried in a similar manner to create casein protein supplements or dairy products like cottage cheese.
On average, casein protein takes 5-7 hours to digest completely. It is much slower digesting than its whey counterpart, so while it’s not ideal when the muscles need protein quickly, it’s perfect for sustaining them over long periods without sustenance, like those mentioned above.
Taste of Optimum Nutrition Gold
Now, the part you’re waiting for—what is our take on Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard Casein Protein, specifically? Well, we feel about this product the same way we feel about the Gold Standard Whey—it’s the best.
The taste is rich and full-bodied. It’s available in chocolate supreme, creamy vanilla, cookies and cream, and chocolate peanut butter. Each flavour will have you questioning whether it’s a health supplement or a dessert.
Texture of Optimum Nutrition Gold
Again, Gold Standard Casein’s texture is barring none. It’s silky-smooth and grit-free. Casein is naturally thicker than whey, and so it might remind you more of full-fat chocolate milk or a runny milkshake. However, if you’re not a fan of the thicker consistency, you can easily remedy this with a bit more liquid than recommended.
Optimum Nutrition Gold Overall Rank
Gold Standard Casein is easily a 10 out of 10 at Supplement Superstore. We love the taste and texture, along with the limited ingredients we haven’t mentioned yet. The chocolate flavour includes:
- micellar casein
- cocoa powder
- natural and artificial flavours
- gum blend (for flavour)
- lecithin (to emulsify)
- acesulfame potassium (to sweeten)
- sucralose (to sweeten)
- protease (to promote digestion)
Compared to many of the top casein protein powders, we think you’ll agree that Gold Standard Casein Protein has a reasonable ingredient list instead of a bunch of stuff with scary-sounding names.
Do Customers Agree?
Yes. It’s always a good feeling when our customers agree with our personal opinions about a product, and for the most part, the Optimum Nutrition products always pass that test.
People love the flavour and the formula of this casein protein product.
Try This Casein Protein Tip:
While the suggested use of this product is to mix with 8-14 ounces of liquid, depending on your desired consistency, we want to let you in on a veteran supplement user secret: mix a scoop of Gold Standard Casein with just enough water to make a pudding consistency.
The flavour and texture combination creates a dessert-like snack that can satisfy when working with a restrictive diet that limits sweets. For added yum and nutrition, mix in some peanut butter or PB2.
