Supplement Superstore Reviews: Vega Sport Protein
Supplement reviews are easy to come by but more challenging to believe. In our supplement review series, we promise to keep it honest and provide a complete review of some our products we use ourselves.
In today’s supplement review, we’re talking about Vega Sport Protein. Vega is one of the best vegan supplement brands on the market, with various options formulated with vegan athletes in mind. We’ve already gone over the Vega All-in-One Shake, which is a meal replacement ideally consumed in the morning as it also includes greens, omegas, vitamins, and more. On the other hand, Vega Sport Protein is more suitable for a post-workout shake and more comparable to a whey isolate shake. So, let’s dive in.
Why Use Vegan Protein Supplements?
Veganism is a lifestyle choice characterized by refusing to eat or use animal products. While vegetarians avoid meat, some might still eat dairy, eggs, honey, or other animal products. Vegans typically are of the mindset that it’s not theirs to use if it came from an animal.
While veganism is growing in popularity and accessibility, it’s still considered slightly extreme. So, the popularity of vegan and plant-based protein powders is very interesting. It’s not unusual to find a non-vegan person using vegan protein powders. But why?
There could be many reasons, but some of the most common reasons that a non-vegan would use a vegan protein powder like Vega Sport Protein are:
- dairy sensitivities or intolerances
- less bloating
- equally effective
- better for your heart
Benefits of a Vegan Lifestyle
It’s not just the supplements like Vega Sport Protein that can ease uncomfortable symptoms and improve heart health. The diet as a whole has plenty of benefits to the body and the planet (not to mention the animals). The most notable are:
- lowered BMI (though this is not the best measure of health)
- lowered blood pressure and cholesterol levels
- minimized reliance on pharmaceuticals to treat medical conditions
- reduced individual carbon footprint by more than 70%
What’s more, you don’t need to commit to going completely vegan to reap the benefits. Research shows that reducing your intake of animal products by as little as one meal per day can significantly change your health and environmental impact. Even better, you won’t risk certain nutrient deficiencies that unfortunately go hand-in-hand with the benefits if you still consume some animal products.
What to Look for in a Vegan Protein Supplement
If you’re convinced about giving a vegan protein powder a try, you don’t have to look any further than Vega Sport Protein. In terms of taste and texture, it’s top of the line. But we’ll get to those specifics in a minute.
As a bonus to our supplement review, let’s take a minute to discuss the considerations to take when switching from a standard whey protein shake to a vegan supplement. Many of the considerations for the supplements are the same.
Try to Avoid These Things in Any Protein Supplement:
- artificial sweeteners
- fillers and additives
You’ll also need to watch for allergens and ensure the sugar content isn’t too high. Besides these important factors, you’ll also want to make sure that your vegan protein supplement is a complete protein.
What is a Complete Protein?
A complete protein contains all nine essential amino acids. The essential amino acids are those the body cannot make on its own and are required from food so the body can repair and synthesize protein.
Animal sources are complete proteins. However, many plant sources contain only a few of these essential amino acids. This isn’t a big concern for people following a vegan diet if they’re eating a wide variety of foods because the body combines amino acids to form complete proteins throughout the day.
Why is it Important for Vegan Supplements?
While you don’t have to spend too much time worrying about this in your whole foods, it doesn’t make much sense to add a vegan protein supplement that doesn’t count as a complete source. After all, supplements are meant for convenience.
Another reason to ensure your protein supplement is a complete source if you’re using it for a post-workout shake is so the supplement can deliver all necessary amino acids to your muscles as quickly as possible. This way, your body switches out of the muscle break-down phase (catabolic) and into the muscle-building phase (anabolic) as quickly as possible. This helps to avoid excessive breakdown of the muscles.
Vega Sport Protein Supplement Review
Now that you’re better educated on vegan protein supplements, you can fully appreciate our supplement review on Vega Sport Protein. As we said, Vega Sport Protein is a top-of-the-line vegan protein supplement formulated specifically for athletes in the post-workout period.
In this way, it’s ideal for replacing a whey isolate shake. As we compare the nutritional profiles of Vega’s supplement with one of our best-selling whey isolate shakes, you’ll see what we mean.
Vega Sport Protein (Chocolate) Nutritional Profile
- 160 calories
- 0.5 grams of fat
- 6 grams of carbs
- 3 grams of fibre
- 1 gram of sugar
- 30 grams of protein
Mutant’s Iso Surge (Triple Chocolate) Nutritional Profile
- 120 calories
- 1 gram of fat
- 2 grams of carbs
- 0.5 grams of fibre
- 1 gram of sugar
- 25 grams of protein
As you can see, these post-workout shakes are similar in their nutritional content, with Iso Surge having fewer calories and less fibre and protein content. Vega Sport Protein has more total carbohydrates, but the net carbs are just 3 grams after adjusting for the fibre.
It’s also worth noting that whey isolate has remained king of the protein supplements for so long, thanks to how quickly it digests and gets to work in the body after a workout. But research shows that there is no significant difference in muscle or strength progress when comparing the two.
Vega Sport Protein Taste
The nutritional profile is impressive, especially considering you typically need to lower your expectations a bit when you switch to vegan supplements. So, how does the taste stack up?
Vega Sport Protein tastes great. It’s surprisingly good compared to most vegan protein supplements. It’s smooth and creamy with no aftertaste to speak of. We still don’t think it’s quite as good as many of the whey protein shakes, but as far as vegan supplements go, it’s definitely our top pick.
The supplement is available in chocolate, vanilla, berry, mocha, and peanut butter, with chocolate and peanut butter tied for our favourite flavours.
Vega Sport Protein Texture
If you’ve read our review on the Vega All-in-One Shake, you know the texture is the main reason that led us to rank it an eight out of ten despite our obsession with the product. Happily, that’s not the case here.
Vega Sport Protein is silky-smooth and a bit thicker than your average whey shake. The label suggests mixing with 375mL of your beverage of choice. Even when using water, the shake is on the thicker side. The rich, smooth flavour and the consistency make a nice, refreshing shake. However, for an even creamier shake, use oat or soy milk and be prepared for a milkshake-esque post-workout shake.
Vega Sport Protein Overall Rank
Overall, we’ve got to give Vega Sport Protein a solid and well-earned ten out of ten. Everything from the nutritional profile to the ingredients to the price to the texture stacks up nicely compared to a whey isolate shake.
We’re confident that you’ll be happy with this product, even if this is the first time you’re trying a vegan supplement. Additionally, long-term vegan supplement users will love this even more. They might even question that this isn’t a dairy product!
Do Customers Agree About Vega Sport Protein
Our customers agree with this being a stellar product, and some even mention the brand’s quality as a whole. A comment that we must agree with as well.

5 Other Vega Products to Try
Vega is a brand to watch as it continues to grow. It already has a wide variety of nutritional products for different applications. Below are the five products we recommend trying if you love Vega Sport Protein.
We mentioned a bit about this product in our supplement review, but it’s worth touching on further. This is a protein supplement in addition to:
- greens supplement
- omega supplement
- fibre supplement
When Vega says all-in-one, that’s what it means. Easily replace most of your morning supplements with the Vega All-in-One shake. The macros are 5 grams of fat, 13 grams of carbs, and 20 grams of fibre. Comparatively, you can see that the Vega Sport Protein is a better option for post-workout recovery, but the All-in-One shake is more suitable for replacing meals.
We really like this supplement first thing in the morning to start your day with a nutritionally dense meal. We recommend trying the French Vanilla flavour mixed into equal parts coffee and soy milk for a creamy vanilla latte.
Most people are aware of the importance of electrolytes, thanks to the popularity of sports drinks like Gatorade and Power Aid. Unfortunately, those drinks are loaded with sugar, which isn’t ideal, especially when you’re chugging the giant-sized bottles.
Electrolytes help maintain proper hydration, and with Sport Hydrator, you can get that support with zero added calories or sugar. We recommend supplementing with electrolyte support if you:
- drink a gallon of water or more per day
- sweat excessively
- work out (while sweating) for more than an hour
- spend time in the heat (outdoors, saunas, hot tubs, etc.)
Sleep is critical to fitness results, mental performance, and emotional wellbeing. But, if you’re one of the millions of Canadian adults who struggle to get adequate, restful sleep, it’s likely you’re struggling through your day-to-day life.
Vega’s Nighttime Rest and Repair product contains a blend of plant protein sources with 3mg of melatonin and 500mg of L-leucine. This combination provides amino acids for optimal muscular repair and synthesis and natural sleep support. We recommend this product for anyone who needs another serving of protein in their day, needs better nighttime rest, or struggles with falling asleep.
We love pre-workout supplements to help make every workout count. Unfortunately, many are loaded with too much caffeine and end up making you feel jittery and unable to focus. Vega’s Pre-Workout has a 100mg dose of caffeine, about the same as a cup of coffee. This is a great amount because it’s enough to give most people a boost of energy, mental stimulation, and increased exercise performance without any adverse effects.
Along with caffeine from yerba mate and green tea, Vega’s Pre-Workout also includes these proven ingredients to support enhanced performance and energy levels:
This pre-workout is ideal for anyone who likes the idea of caffeine in a pre-workout product but can’t handle large doses. It’s also especially good for endurance athletes, thanks to that dose of carbohydrates (which are critical to performance and severely underrated).
Lastly, we recommend Vega’s Recovery Accelerator to anyone who trains hard or struggles with slow recovery or DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). When your recovery is slow or you’re feeling excessively sore, you open yourself up to significant risk factors like:
- compromised form
The Recovery Accelerator contains carbs necessary for recovery, along with:
- maca powder
You can use this product immediately following your workouts and on your off days to help ensure your body always has what it needs to recover fully.
